Associated Press: Palin’s rise in Alaska includes skirting ethics rules, giving jobs to friends
From the Associated Press today, an article chronicling Alaskan Governor and Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin’s ethics violations:
Some examples:
She attacked political opponents for giving oil companies and other businesses too much control of state government, while simultaneously appointing the founder of an engineering firm that received $6.8 million in state business as head of the transportation department.
She has accepted dozens of gifts worth tens of thousands of dollars since taking office, including two free trips last year that she failed to report on disclosure forms, despite criticizing state legislators for the gifts they take.
She is under another investigation, accused of misusing her office to campaign against a voter referendum calling for tighter mining regulations. Her husband, Todd, has accepted free trips from a mining company to look at their proposed new site.
Another ethics complaint, unresolved, accuses her staff of finding a state job for a friend and campaign contributor.
With Palin’s polling numbers in a virtual freefall, one wonders what will happen next? Even as all eyes seem to be on tomorrow’s debate, it seems inevitable that McCain is about to walk into an enormous trap when he attempts to call Obama out on Ayers. But with friends like Palin, and reports today that McCain’s transition chief lobbied for Saddam Hussein (??????), while simultaneously new data shows independants (surprise surprise) are generally unhappy with McCain smear tacticts, does Obama need to do anything other than remain gaffe free?
