the perils of messing up “hello”

so i’ve discovered the most significant peril of living in jordan: if you somebody says to you “ahlein,” you’re in trouble. see usually they say ‘ahlen,’ which means ‘welcome,’ like ‘welcome to my home/shop/school/country.’ but then you’re supposed to respond with ‘ahlein’ which is like saying ‘double back on your welcome.’ but if they start with ‘ahlein’ and you’re in a store and you stutter, you are not going to get the amount of change you deserve back. why? because clearly you’re an idiot american. i’m serious, this has happened three times. not that i don’t call them on it when they try and stiff me 8 bucks.

still, what’re you gonna do? anyway, i’m still having a great time here, albiet getting on the track to be ready to go home. i can’t wait to see everyone when i get back,

  1. Hi, dear Will.
Since I can never recall your typical email address, I’ll write here & hope you see it.
Oh, PS, it’s Diana not your dad : )
You’re probably sleeping now, which is good. I’m in the middle of writing a story about a Philly choreographer who’s bringing a group to town.
Saw Ned last weekend for a few days. He seems fine, but misses you a lot. Your mom is holding up well with you away at this point, we had a lot of fun & ate a ton of sushi.
Getting psyched for camp, I’m planning to dig a well, pan for gold, perfect my golf swing and write the next big Broadway musical. My ankle and knee are still messed up so it looks like hiking is out for the rest of my life at this point. Boo.
    Other than that nothing’s changed.
Well, Devan moved in with my parents over the weekend. A good sign, maybe. I don’t dare discuss it further as I can’t handle it.
Catya is doing well in school but still has a long way to go in the maturity department. Whatever. I’m just tired of picking up the pieces constantly.
Your dad is freaking out over his big exam in June, and I don’t blame him…if he doesn’t pass, he’s out of the running for his Ph.D. I have total confidence, as should everyone else, as he’s brilliant, but still I can understand why he’s nervous. It’ll all be over by mid-June.
Looking forward to your safe return.
    D
